Most websites these days have a mobile version of their website. Since most developers like to copy proven UI & UX patterns from big-name companies, the mobile menu system implemented with Google and Facebook has become a big hit amongst today's programmers.
That menu relies on a system that detects the user's viewport size and if the screen size is smaller than the menu's width, the menu is reorganized in a hidden panel.
Instead of the menu, a bar is shown indicating the presence of the hidden menu. Clicking the bar brings up the menu options which can then be clicked and the menu minimized.
jPanelMenu is a jQuery plugin for building these kinds of menus for implementing on other sites.
A demo is included with the download package.
